Global data center service provider Equinix announced today that it opened an International Business Exchange data center in the Washington, D.C.-area, a region it said serves as its main hub for inbound and outbound traffic.
In a release, the firm said the new IBX data center will enable it to boost peering, cross connect and traffic exchange services and allow its customers to extend their market reach. “As the economy continues to globalize, the Washington, D.C. metro area increases in strategic importance,” Peter Ferris, the president of Equinix’s North American division said in a statement.
“Adding DC6 to our roster of IBX data centers will greatly strengthen our leadership position in the area and will help us better serve our expanding ecosystem of global companies.” The DC6 center in Equinix’s sixth IBX data center in the nation’s capital.
Additionally, the company also announced plans to expand an IBX data center in Singapore due to rising demand for colocation and interconnection services in South Asia. The expansion will add 850 new cabinet equivalents by mid-2011, the firm said.
