New Faces at WS&T

What do Wall Street & Technology readers and Rachel Hunter have in common? Well, both almost certainly never want to hear Rod Stewart's "Love Touch" again. But the more important connection is Maria Santos.

Maria is the newest addition to the Wall Street & Technology editorial team. Maria, who joined us in July, covers compliance and investment management, including stories this month on the top priorities for asset managers (page 33) and on the wide range of approaches firms are taking to meet the SEC's latest deadlines for business-continuity planning (page 41).

Maria has held many different roles in magazine publishing, including one stint as the associate editor of a now-defunct publication, Ramp, that tried to find a niche between GQ's high-brow content and the somewhat less-sophisticated men's magazines. That's where she encountered the likes of Rachel Hunter, Fear Factor's Joe Rogan and former Playmate Nikki Ziering. It's also where she learned some Hollywood lessons (not necessarily from the celebs mentioned) the hard way. "The less of a star you are, the more attitude you have," she observes.

Maria brings a wealth of international understanding and perspective that's particularly valuable as we look to cover an industry that couldn't be more global in its reach and impact. She spent more than five years living in the Philippines, jetting around Southeast Asian capitals to help launch an international edition of Cosmopolitan magazine from a base in Manila (her favorite destination: Singapore). She speaks fluent Tagalog, the Philippine national language, though she's yet to master Mandarin. Maria can be reached at [email protected].

My own face also is a new one to this space, though it's only here temporarily. Editor-in-chief Kerry Massaro is on maternity leave for a few months, so I've shifted my duties within the InformationWeek Media Network, where I usually work as executive editor of features for InformationWeek.
