Pyxis Mobile Extends App Framework to iPhones

Platform to support writing an app once and delivering it to BlackBerrys, iPhones and Windows smart phones. Concur has already ported its expense report software to the three devices using this software.

Two years ago, at a conference about mobile applications on Wall Street, I asked a mutual fund technology executive when he thought his company would start providing applications for iPhones and letting employees use them. He asked me to look around at all the software companies represented in the room that had provided BlackBerry extensions to their programs. "When everyone in this room has applications that run on the iPhone, then we'll start supporting it," he said.

Today Pyxis Mobile announced a first step toward this vision. The company, which provides a mobile platform used by many Wall Street firms to build and deliver BlackBerry applications, has announced support for iPhone applications. Customers may now configure a single mobile application that runs natively on iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile smartphones. Pyxis Mobile is offering data integration, security, and monitoring. The company's Application Studio can be used to leverage the camera, GPS, device interface, and other inherent features of these three market-dominant devices.

Smartphone sales are growing at an annual rate of 30% and demand for applications has exploded, according to Pyxis Mobile. The company says its packaged and custom-configured applications now run on 88% of smartphones sold in North America in 2009.

Concur, the provider of hosted expense report software, unveiled Concur Mobile for iPhone last month at the NBTA Convention in San Diego. The travel and expense application, built on Pyxis Mobile's platform, enables iPhone, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile users to manage their itineraries, conduct in-policy business travel transactions, capture T&E expense data and approve expense reports from any location.
