Growing Internal Talent Vital for Success

CEOs need to do a better job of investing in career management for their company's employees, says HP's Meg Whitman.

One of the most important jobs for a CEO is to develop talent internally, if the company hopes to grow and prosper over the long term, says Meg Whitman, HP's CEO in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.

Currently, Whitman is spending 10 to 15 percent of her time on growing internal technology leaders and plans on increasing that percentage in the future.

Whitman also said she would not feel like she did a good job in terms of growing talent "unless her successor is an internal choice."
