Citi Hires Ian Smith to Head Electronic Execution in Asia Pacific

Smith joins Citi after ten years with Credit Suisse where he was head of AES in Asia Pacific.

Beefing up its competitive position in the Asian region, Citi hired Ian Smith to become head of Electronic Execution Product for Asia Pacific, according to today’s announcement out of Hong Kong.

Smith comes to Citi after 10 years at Credit Suisse where he was head of Advanced Execution Services Product Asia Pacific. Smith will report to Paul Sanger, Asia Pacific head of Execution Services.

“This hire further underlines our intentions to become the leading provider of Electronic Execution Services to our clients in Asia Pacific. Ian’s market knowledge, experience in creating execution platforms and client relationships will be instrumental in helping drive our business forward in this area which is a major strategic priority,” stated Sanger.

Smith will work closely with Ben Valentine, head of Electronic Execution Sales Trading and will lead a team of five professionals focused on providing advanced solutions to clients in the electronic execution area. Additional hires are expected across the sales and trading team in the coming months.

Citi Electronic Execution provides access to 30 markets globally including alternative pools of liquidity and is continually adding mew venues to ensure best execution. Earlier this year, Citi extended CitiSmart its electronic trading platform in India via the National Stock Exchange of India and via Malaysia via Bursa Malaysia. These launches expanded Citi’s electronic execution suite in Asia, which includes Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan. Citi said its seeing record flows across its platform in some of these markets.
