Despite compliance scrutiny, instant messaging is a hot communications tool on trading floors.

Bloomberg is rolling out Instant Bloomberg as a component of its Launch Pad product. IB is a presence network that tells users who else is logged on. "It's a more immediate and incontinuous chat form, similar to doing instant messaging on AOL," says a Bloomberg spokesman.

Unique features include the ability to drag and drop real-time quotes, charts, or news stories into the instant message. Also, the system takes up less real-estate space, because IB can run as a component outside the Bloomberg window.

In the first quarter of 2004, Reuters will launch an advanced version of Reuters Messaging with connectivity to three partners - AOL, Lotus and MSN Messenger.
