Sectorbase.com Enhances Technology Infrastructure, Releases New Tool

Updates its technology infrastructure for faster, more efficient navigation, calculation and reporting.

Sectorbase.com, a tool aimed at helping analysts and portfolio managers with investment decisions on specific industry sectors, has recently updated its technology infrastructure for faster, more efficient navigation, calculation and reporting.

Sectorbase.com uses a proprietary classification methodology, system and database to organize publicly traded companies by comparable industry, sector, subsection and group classification. Aimed at portfolio managers and analysts to assist with investment decisions, the site features a new user interface as well as the recently released SectorEngine, a tool used to customize and access the site's continuously updated sector indices.

"SectorEngine is a very sophisticated monitoring tool for sector rotation-in other words which sectors are performing best and worst," explains John Parker, president and coo of Sectorbase.com. "It takes the index values calculated on every product area in the database and puts them on display to search and sort to drill right down and find out which sector is up the most and then get a list of those stocks." Sectorbase.com covers 15,000 product groups and takes each underlying company within the group to create an index based on the products or services provided.

Recent technology upgrades made on the site include the move to an Oracle 8I server and a separation of database and Web servers to share the processing load. The user interface has been improved with streamlined navigation and integration features, with 20 pages reduced to one in many cases. "Our initial user interface was very powerful, but it was also very complex," says Parker. "So in the recent release we've simplified the interface and standardized it so it looks more familiar to Web users. There are more drop-down menus and less hidden functionality to make getting around the site more intuitive."

Parker adds that Sectorbase.com currently focuses on the finance, healthcare, media and technology sectors, which covers about 4,500 stocks. The site plans to expand into the retail and energy sectors next and expects to cover "all companies traded on a U.S. exchange by the end of this year," says Parker. Although he would not name specific sites, Sectorbase.com is also working with several major portal companies to use the site's hierarchy to filter content specific to the site. The indices and analysis are licensed on a per seat basis with pricing starting at $895 per month and discounts given according to volume.
