WHO WAS YOUR MENTOR?:
My father. He was a mechanical engineer by training and that imparted to me at an early age an analytical way of thinking that has served me well. That's why I went into the sciences. There's always something to be enhanced by looking at [a problem] analytically.

WHAT WORK EXPERIENCE HAD THE MOST LASTING IMPRESSION ON YOUR CAREER?:

My current position is the most memorable and influential. In no other job has the pace been so fast with so much at stake in terms of making a right and wrong decision. This is like an extreme sport. If you like to feel excited but don't mind being tired at the end of the day, that's good. It's with you every hour of the day and every day of the week.

WHAT'S NEXT

There is no end in sight to algorithmic trading. The more demand we're able to satisfy, the more [transactions] they send us. The infrastructure, network and throughput needs are all growing dramatically, and we have to be in a position to supply it. There is a huge increase in volume, revenue and transactions. That trend shows no sign of abating.

We use financial goals. We have to realize benefits of the mergers. Everyone on the Street is waiting for numbers on that. That metric is visible to a lot of people. When will the things that I asked for be delivered, and what did it cost me to get those?

Manhattan Project Wrap-Up

We will work on the Euronext merger through 2009. NYSE Euronext is now the largest exchange in the world. We are the leaders from a global perspective, and we will only grow. So there is a lot of work that needs to be done. As you scale on a global level, you'd like to be more efficient -- serve the markets and customers and combine the systems to do that.

TOP 3 CURRENT PROJECTS

Integration of NYSE/Archipelago Systems

When NYSE and Archipelago came together, they had redundant systems. We needed to reduce costs and consolidate, get the benefits of both systems. We will complete most of the integration this year, but it will spill over into next year. We will use the Archipelago system for electronic trading and the NYSE system for the trading floor.

Integration of NYSE/Euronext Systems

This is a similar challenge to the NYSE/Archipelago integration. Each party brought very good systems to the merger, each designed for a specific need. Euronext catered to European markets -- five exchanges in five different countries; NYSE brings the strengths of its different systems.

Everything Else

Be on the lookout for new opportunities for the business worldwide. This could be something like a merger or acquisition, or to leverage new technology to enhance everything we're doing.
