I am a subscriber of Wall Street & Technology. I would be interested in the Web Services Program, but I have to admit I could use a boot camp approach as mentioned by the Merrill folks in your editorial. As far as formats or ideas, I think examples such as those listed on page 26 of the November edition are a good start.

I do think highly of your magazine, by the way. The articles are quite topical, the amount of copy in each magazine is good (not too much information) and it delivers on both form and usefulness.

Bloomberg: Aware of Overtaxing But Can't Stop Collecting?
I am sure that by now you have received many responses to your article, but having worked as a California tax auditor for 13 years, I may have some input that helps answer your question.

The fact that Bloomberg is aware that excess sales tax is being charged is, in itself, not sufficient to stop the tax-collection process. Until each state has investigated the issue and responded with an updated audit approach to the collection of tax, and a determination of what portion of the billing is exempt, Bloomberg must continue to collect the tax or face the possibility of having to pay any additional tax out of its own pocket.

In California, Bloomberg stopped collecting tax in April 2001, about a year or so after the initial discovery of excess collection. The good news is that this additional period is open under statute, and each customer may file a claim for refund and receive a check directly back from the state. I am not sure of the procedure for states other than California.

In the September issue of WS&T, Todd Burns - the recently appointed president and CEO of Lynch, Jones and Ryan - was incorrectly identified as "Tom Burns." The rollout of LJRdirect - an online accounts access tool - which happened nearly four years ago, was not tied to any expansion effort as reported.
